Professor Stephen Hawking has today sidestepped performing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge after being nominated by fellow scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Hawking, who is well known for performing many inadvisable feats such as bungee jumping and Facebook trolling, has declined the opportunity to take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge, prompting some observers to label him as "cruel" and "unfeeling".
"It is cruel," claimed Tumblr user BigEnoughForMyMan. "I don't know who this Hawking guy is - or should I say WhoreKing - but not doing the ice bucket challenge is a kick in the face for... well, whatever the ALS part of the challenge stands for. I dunno, is it some sort of charity or something? It doesn't matter. Hawking has denied them a voice, and that's digusting."
The Ice Bucket Challenge has gone viral over the past few weeks, prompting many celebrities and wannabe celebrities to post short video clips of themselves being drenched in freezing water. The Challenge is supposed to promote the ALS Association, which is an American non-profit organisation which promotes awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Some commentators have already made clear, however, that those celebrities currently enjoying the 'fun' of the challenge (and the publicity) are not doing enough to promote the actual cause.
