Dafne Schippers to drop the 100M entirely to focus only on the 200M

Dafne Schippers is to drop the 100M entirely from her programme and focus exclusively on the 200M. The two-time reigning World Champion made the announcement in an interview today after yet another disappointing finish in the 100M this season where she ended up in fifth place at the Monaco Diamond League Meet. Coincidentally, it was also her fifth 100M race this year in which she failed to finish on the podium.

Speaking to reporters after the race, the disappointed 2017 World Championship bronze medalist in the event had this to say:

"Gosh. Another failure this year. I just don't seem to understand what's going on. I can't explain it. I came into the race confident that I was going to do well. I felt great. There's nothing wrong with me physically and then this happened. I have worked on my starts in the shorter sprint over and over and I just can't seem to get it right on race day."

The Dutchwoman continued:

"I know that I am tall but I am not using that as an excuse. And I am definitely not going down the racial road again. I am simply fed-up of it. If I win, I am a drug-cheat. If I lose, it's because I am whi… well you get the point. But I have come to the conclusion that the 100M dash is just not for me. I am not getting any younger and when you have to compete against younger up and coming athletes in this arena plus the already well-established athletes, it becomes more and more difficult. I spoke it over with Rana my coach and we both concluded that it was best that I focus solely on the 200M seeing that it is my stronger race."

She went on:

"I know that I may be taking a bit of a gamble here but I have to do what's in my best interest for my own success. And sometimes in doing that you have to take risks. That said, I can still avail myself to run a leg in the 4x100M at the World's, Euros or Olympic Games if the Dutch team wants me too. But of course, not the anchor leg for obvious reasons."

She concluded:

"I have to face the reality that I am not that good of a 100M runner as I am a 200M runner. So it is imperative that I channel all my energies into running the race that I am better at even if it means that I have just slashed my chances of winning a medal in a major championships by fifty percent. But, you know the saying: "No guts no glory." I had the guts to drop the 100M from my programme. Only time will tell if the glory will follow me in the 200M from now on."
