Russian Coach: We are not afraid of Spain or Portugal

Russian Coach Cherchesov Stanislav is optimistic about his team's chances of progressing from the round of sixteen at this year's World Cup after his charges became the first team to qualify for the second round following its convincing 3-1 win over Egypt which effectively eliminated the Pharaohs. The Russians continued the fine form which helped them embarrass the Saudis in their opening game as star striker Denis Cheryshev scored for the second match running and drew level with Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo on three goals in the race for the Golden Boot. Artem Dzyuba and an Ahmed Fathi own goal added to the Egyptians' misery. The only measure of solace for the North Africans was Mohammed Salah's return and him getting on the score sheet from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute but they are effectively the first team eliminated.

Speaking at a press conference after the game, Stanislav said this:

"Well, we have achieved our first goal. No poon intended. We have made eet out of thee group. Many people thought that we were not even going to ween a match and here we are now - thee first team in thee second round. I am so proud of my boys. In fact, thee whole of Russia is proud of these team. They have done well."

He continued:

"That said, a lot of Russians out there are probably wary of thee fact that we may have to face either Spain or Portoogal in thee next round. I have to let you know that we are not afraid of either team because I know that weeth thee wonderful home support that our team is getting and with thee talented team that we have, we are quite capable of beating them. Portoogal may have Ronaldo and Spain may have Costa, but Russia has Cheryshev - a very talented striker who is capable of holding his own against any team in thee world. But of course, first it would be important for us to win Group A so as to show thee world that Russia is a force to be reckoned with een football once again."

He concluded:

"We have already beaten thee odds by qualifying for thee second round, now we have to beat Uruguay on thee 25th and ensure that we secure top spot in thee group. After that we will ensure that either Ronaldo and his teammates or Costa and his teammates get a first class plane ticket out of Russia courtesy of our National Football Team."
