World number two Novak Djokovic was left devastated by his shocking straight sets defeat in the final of the Italian Open at the hands of German youngster Alexander Zverev on Sunday. Speaking to reporters in the post-match interview after the reigning French Open Champion was humbled 6-4 6-3 in the Championship match, the twelve-time Major winner appeared to be on the brink of tears as he said:
“Boy, this loss is hard. You know sometimes you come out here and you give it your all and it’s just not enough.”
His voice cracking up.
The Serb continued:
”But that’s how it is sometimes when you play. You may not always get the results you expect. In addition to which the clay surface is one of the most unpredictable surfaces to play on. Frankly speaking I have to admit that it’s not exactly my favourite surface that’s why you have to tip your hat to people like Rafael Nadal who play so consistently well on this surface. I must say that if Alexander keeps up this kind of play he could be a future Roland Garros Champion in the making. Don’t be surprised if he upsets the bookmakers and wins the trophy after the final is played on the 4th of next month the same way Stan Warinka upset me to win the title two years ago.”
He went on:
“This loss doesn’t do much for my confidence as I prepare to defend my French Open title. I am looking to become the first man since Rafael Nadal to win back-to-back Roland Garros titles. That’s why I am working with former Champion Andre Agassi to help me in the coming fortnight. That said, given his not too impressive French Open record with his solitary win coming in 1999, nine years after he lost in the final and with his consecutive Championship final losses in 1990 and 1991, I am now wondering if hiring him was a smart move on my part."
