Children around the world are this week discovering a rather different "special surprise" in their delicious Kinder Eggs. Rather than the usual piece of fix-it-together tat, or finding that they've got the one model out of 7 that they didn't want, they have instead discovered that parts of the mysteriously disappeared flight MH370 are nestled inside.
One of the children, named here Jimmy Ribbit for legal reasons, declared his disappointment.
"I was really hoping for a Mickey Mouse, especially because I keep getting that weird Pete dog-man. But instead I found that there was a piece of what my dad told me was called a spoiler on. I was shocked, then I cried, then I needed the toilet, and then I wanted to play with my dad's iPhone."
The piece, one of several hundred-thousand apparently shipped around the world by Kinder, is now on its way to the special lab set up to attempt to reassemble the airliner like a giant jigsaw puzzle. A spokesperson for Kinder, Lemma Riddlesplane told us:
"We have nothing to say for now. Although it should be mentioned that the chocolate has in no way suffered during this incident, and is delicious as ever. We have also increased the ratio of Mickeys to Petes in the latest batch, just to satisfy oiks like Jimmy Ribbit."
How the pieces ever got into the Kinder factory is, at this point, unclear. Some have pointed out, however, that it makes as much sense as pretty much any other place.
