In a fit of genuine journalistic effort, we at Laughsend.com can now report on the stunning discovery that, in the same way many high-rise buildings avoid building a 13th floor, nearly all speedometers have no indicator for 88mph. This must be in some sort of deference to the popular Back to the Future series of films, in which a souped-up DeLorean car was able to time-travel once hitting that magical speed.
We first heard about this 'myth' from an email forwarded to us from reader calling him or herself "Lando Calrissian", who claimed that he/she had owned several cars, all of which he could never quite get to hit 88mph, but instead always wavering between 87 and 89 (which, he/she explained, are the two integers immediately adjacent to 88). [Editors note: to be honest, a lot of the email read like this, and it took about 7 hours to read fully through, and it blew our bandwidth allowance for the day, which was a shame because some of us had important online banking to be done. But we digress.]
In further testing, we realised that our intrepid reader was correct, and all the cars we tested failed to hit that exact speed marking. Though the actual reason for building their speedometers in that way was not initially clear, we called Hondamotor Metro for some off the record explanations:
"I'm sorry," the first response came, "But we have no idea what you're talking about. There's no such company as Hondamotor Metro, and I'm not even a real person either; I'm a robot called Alan."
When pushed further, however, Alan suddenly became more lucid:
"Ohhh, you mean the whole thing with the... yeah, I get you now. Sure, I can explain. It's because you're all idiots."
While the explanation wasn't entirely satisfying, it did help explain a lot, and we look forward to a follow up in the next few weeks. Please stay tuned.
