World no. 1 Women's Tennis Player and Defending Singles Champion at the Australian Open - Germany’s Angelique Kerber has been subjected to some cyber harassment from pro-American tennis fans following her shocking straight sets fourth round defeat at the hands of American Coco Vandeweghe. Kerber, who shocked perennial favourite Serena Williams in last year's final and then went on to claim an Olympic silver medal, the US Open title, along with the number one ranking, was always going to be hard-pressed to repeat last year's heroics, but nothing on earth could have prepared her for what eventually happened. Speaking to the German newspaper SportBild, a distraught Kerber had this to say:
"I had a bad day because Coco played an extraordinary game. Her brilliant serves utterly blew me away. I give her all the credit. That said, I never in my wildest dreams would have thought that I would have been subjected to the kind of abuse that I received from pro-American tennis fans on my Facebook page. One person wrote on my wall "Goodbye Nazi." Another had the audacity to bring Donald Trump into this by writing: "It's only been two days that Trump is President and America is already becoming great again. USA!! USA!!" Lets be real here, was all this even necessary? Why does everything have to come down to politics?"
Kerber didn't miss her chance to take cheap parting shots at her vanquisher though, as she concluded:
"I honestly can't see her winning this title. Coco will definitely be hard-pressed to emulate my heroics of last year. Besides, does anyone really want a champion who shares the same name with a fat-ass model with fake boobs who is married to a rapper?"
