A dejected Juventus Captain Gianluigi Buffon had a pessimistic outlook about his chances of ever winning the elusive Champions League title after his side was totally outplayed and humiliated by Defending Champions Real Madrid at the Juventus Stadium in Turin by concluding:
"I am destined to never win a Champions League."
The three-time Champions League runner-up made the comment as he spoke to reporters following another embarrassing defeat against a Cristiano Ronaldo inspired Real Madrid team which is seeking to become the first team to win a hat-trick of titles in the Champions League era.
"Yes, you heard me correctly. I know it may not by the appropriate thing to say as a Captain and my teammates look up to me for inspiration; but how can one explain that fact that Cristiano Ronaldo always seems to have a knack for scoring so frequently against me?"
He went on:
"I barely even had time to settle down in the match. In fact, I think it was only about three minutes gone on the clock when he scored against me. But the overhead kick really left me embarrassed. I don't know what on earth my defenders were doing. You can't afford to give a player of the quality as Ronaldo that amount of space. You just can't."
Buffon said; trying to fight back tears.
He continued:
"Even when we went in at half-time only a goal down I thought that we had a chance to get back into the match. But when Ronaldo scored again and then Paulo got sent off I knew that it was over. But I have to say that our shooting was off tonight. Had we gotten more accurate shots in I reckon that the score-line may have been closer. Unfortunately, as things stand we need nothing more than a miracle in the second leg at the Bernabeu. Sadly, that seems hardly likely to happen."
Buffon concluded:
"This is obviously not a good year for me. Sure, I may probably win another Scudetto and Coppa Italia in a few weeks, but what good does that do for you when you win it every year and you still can't win the elusive Champions League title and worse yet I will not even be in the World Cup this summer. But hey, I guess I must look on the bright side of things, look at Ronaldo, despite all his Champions League success, I 'm sure that if he's given the chance, he'd trade all those Champions League titles for the one World Cup title that I won in 2006 in an instant."
