Martina Hingis - once the darling of Swiss tennis who, at 16 become the youngest women's player to win a Grand Slam Singles title in the 20th century when she upset Mary Pierce to win the Australian Open in 1997, and then went on to claim four more Grand Slam singles titles in her career, but who always fell short on the red clay at Roland Garros, has invoked the ire of the Swiss public for an insensitive tweet she made following the ouster of her compatriot Timea Bacsinszky in the semifinals of the French Open at the hands of number 47-ranked Latvian Jelena Ostapenko.
Immediately after the match which Ostapenko won in three sets: 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, Hingis tweeted @mhingis:
"Wow! Timea lost. But at least I can draw solace from the fact that Switzerland will have to wait a little longer before it gets its first female Singles Champion at Roland Garros and I am still the only Swiss woman to win a Grand Slam Singles title. In fact, five of them."
Many Swiss Twitter users were quick to chastise Hingis for her insensitive remarks. Retired compatriot and 2004 Australian Open semifinalist Patty Schnyder responded to Hingis' tweet with this comment @pattyschnyder:
"Well Martina, thanks for showing everyone how much you haven't matured in your 36 years. At least Timea still showed graciousness in defeat and didn't cry on her mommy's shoulder like a certain big baby did back in 1999 when she lost the final to Steffi Graf who was eleven years older than her."
