Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his relief that Portugal were able to get on the podium and end their Confederations Cup campaign on a high by getting the better of Mexico 2-1 in extra time. The reigning World Player of the Year and Champions League and Euro winner, who had to leave his team behind to be with his newborn twins who were born via a surrogate mother, said that it was a "great consolation" after Portugal missed out on the final after falling to Chile in the semifinals in a penalty shootout on Wednesday.
Writing on his Facebook wall Ronaldo said this:
"Okay, so Portugal were able to get the better of Mexico without my services. That's great. Although I am a bit disappointed that we couldn't go all the way and win another trophy, it's still wonderful to know that my teammates were able to accomplish something significant without me on the pitch. It's a great consolation. Today I am the happiest man in the world. I am a new father of twin babies and now I have another medal to go around my neck."
He ended his post by saying:
"Right now I am going to enjoy every moment of this and cherish every precious second because when I appear in court on July 31st to testify in my tax evasion case, I may not be smiling as I am now."
