In a stunning display of creativity and animal handling, a group of British TikTokkers have taken the internet by storm with their quirky tributes to American director Wes Anderson. The catch? Their actors are real-life hedgehogs.
At first glance, it may seem like an unusual pairing - the twee visuals of Anderson's films with the decidedly spiky protagonists. But as one of the TikTokkers explained, it just works.
"People are sick of seeing cats and dogs doing cute stuff on the internet," said 23-year-old Emma Johnson. "Hedgehogs are the next big thing."
The group, known as the "Hedgehog Players", have gained millions of views and social media followers with their miniature sets and meticulous attention to detail in each reenactment - from the iconic staircase scene in "The Grand Budapest Hotel" to the vibrant underwater world of "The Life Aquatic."
But not everyone is impressed. Animal rights activists have expressed concern over the welfare of the hedgehogs, prompting the Hedgehog Players to assure viewers that their actors are treated with the utmost care and affection.
"They're living their best lives," Johnson insisted. "They love to act and they love the attention."
It's not just the hedgehogs that are gaining attention, however - the TikTokkers themselves have caught the eye of a few celebrities. Rumour has it that actor Bill Murray, a frequent collaborator of Anderson's, has reached out to the group with words of encouragement.
"He said something like, 'I never thought I'd see the day when hedgehogs could act better than me,'" Johnson giggled.
Even the notoriously private Anderson himself has made a statement, saying that while he never imagined his films being recreated with hedgehogs, he appreciates the creativity and humour behind it.
As for the Hedgehog Players, they have no plans of slowing down anytime soon. Their growing fame has even led to a merchandise line, featuring plush hedgehogs in miniature Anderson-esque costumes.
"People just can't get enough of the hedgehogs," Johnson shrugged. "Maybe one day we'll even make our own movie."
Only time will tell if we'll see a hedgehog-centric Wes Anderson film in the future, but one thing's for sure - for now, the internet is loving every quirky, adorable minute of the Hedgehog Players' antics. As Johnson puts it, "We're just giving the people what they want."
