After another humiliating night in the Champions League against Spanish opposition, Juventus Captain and Goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon is vowing to never play against a Spanish team again; saying that he has had enough of being embarrassed and looking amateurish against them.
The three-time Champions League runner-up was speaking with the Italian Channel Rai Italia after he and his demoralized Juventus teammates arrived in Turin from Spain where the runners-up from last season started off their 2017/2018 campaign in the worst possible fashion by being thrashed by five-time Champions Barcelona at the Camp Nou; where a Messi brace and another goal from Rakitic left the Italian Champions bottom-last in Group D and with some serious work to do if they are to match their heroics of last season where they made it all the way to the final; even knocking out Barcelona 3-0 on aggregate in the quarterfinals, only to fall to Real Madrid.
This was what the former World Cup winner had to say following the match:
"What else can I say? Another night facing Spanish opposition, another humiliating defeat. I always try my utmost against those Spanish giants like Barcelona and Real Madrid. But sometimes I feel like I am just wasting my time. In 2015, in the semifinals we knocked out Real Madrid who had won it in 2014 and then Barcelona whipped us in the final. Last season we really thought that we were going to win it after blanking Barcelona 3-0 in the quarterfinals but then we ran into Real Madrid team which has never lost a final in the Champions League era and we had no answer to their fire power. Despite my best efforts, it was inevitable that I would be picking the ball out of my goal four times. Now at the start of the 2017/2018 campaign, this debacle happens. 3-0 we went under by? I still can't believe it."
He continued:
"That's seven times I have been beaten in two matches in the Champions League going back to the final last year. This humiliating loss only serves to tell me one thing and that is Spanish teams are my Achilles heel. I really try my utmost against them but despite my best efforts, it's quite obvious that I am not typically up to the task to handle their attacking prowess."
Buffon went on:
"So with that said, I vow to never play against Spanish opposition in the Champions League again. Whenever we are to face Spanish teams in the Champions League, I will sit on the bench while either Carlo or Wojciech starts. I sincerely hope that Massimiliano grants my request for the sake of my personal reputation. I am simply fed-up of being made to look amateurish against them. Besides, when we win Scudettos we all share in the glory don't we? Even the players who are not regular starters. So doesn't it stand to reason that we should all share in the humiliation when we know we're going to lose?"
