Two-time Olympic Champion in Women’s Sabre-Fencing - Mariel Zagunis is set to make her acting debut in Kathryn Bigelow’s live-action remake of the 1980’s cartoon She-Ra: Princess of Power. In an interview with the Magazine Fencing Weekly, Zagunis expressed her delight at playing the swashbuckling Princess in the movie which is set to be released in December.
“When I got the call from Kathryn and she told me that she wanted someone to play the role of She-Ra and that I was the perfect candidate due to my sword-wielding skills, I initially thought that she was joking because I have absolutely no acting experience. The funny thing is that when I was growing up as a kid She-Ra was one of my favorite cartoons. I guess I can say that she was probably one of the main reasons why I decided to take up Fencing. And look at where it has gotten me today. I can now say that I am a two-time Olympic Champion, a four-time World Champion and now a Hollywood Actress with the possibility of making millions.”
Asked if she was nervous about starring in such a big movie project and what would the public think if she doesn’t perform up to expectations and if the movie bombs at the box office, Zagunis had this reply:
“Well you know that is the risk you have to take whenever you embark on a task. It’s kinda like the same feeling I had when I first started fencing in the Olympics. I never knew that I would have become an Olympic Champion but I just went out there and gave it my all. I read the script and I thought that the story-line was great. Kathryn really has a talented bunch of writers working with her and I know that she has what it takes to make a wonderful movie. After all this is the first woman to win an Oscar for Directing so I am of the firm belief that the movie will do well and that this will be the start of my successful Hollywood career. Besides, do you really think that fencers make a lot of money?”
